Maximizing Your Investment: The Ultimate Outboard Motor Maintenance & Saltwater Protection Guide

Buying a new outboard motor is a significant investment for any boat owner. Whether you’ve chosen a Yamaha, Mercury, Honda, Suzuki, or Tohatsu, the key to ensuring that engine lasts for decades—rather than just years—lies in a rigorous maintenance schedule. In Australia, our engines face some of the harshest saltwater conditions in the world. From the high UV index in Australia to the tropical humidity of the North, your marine engine requires specific care.

The 100-Hour Rule

Most modern four-stroke outboards require a professional service every 100 hours of use or once every 12 months, whichever comes first. Skipping these intervals can jeopardize your manufacturer warranty.

The Post-Trip Ritual: Preventing Salt Crystallization

Saltwater is the primary enemy of marine aluminum and internal cooling passages. When saltwater sits inside your engine after a trip, it evaporates and leaves behind salt crystals. Over time, these crystals harden, restricting water flow and causing the engine to overheat.

1. Flushing with Fresh Water

Every time you return from a day on the water, you must flush your engine. Modern outboards from Yamaha and Mercury often feature a dedicated flushing port. Simply connect a garden hose and let the fresh water cycle through for at least 10–15 minutes.

2. External Washdown

Salt spray accumulates under the cowl and on the exterior paint. Use a specialized marine soap to wash down the exterior and the tilt/trim assembly. Avoid high-pressure washers, as they can force salt and water into delicate electrical seals.

Combating Corrosion: Anodes and Protective Coatings

Your engine is equipped with “sacrificial anodes”—small blocks of zinc or aluminum designed to corrode so your engine components don’t. During your regular check-ups, refer to our Frequently Asked Questions to learn when these should be replaced (usually when they have dissolved by 50%).

Additionally, applying a thin film of anti-corrosion spray to the engine block under the cowl can provide an extra layer of protection against the salty coastal air.

Winterization: Preparing for the Off-Season

If you don’t plan on using your boat during the colder months, “winterizing” is essential. Fuel begins to degrade in as little as 30 days. To prevent fuel system clogs in your high-horsepower outboard, we recommend:

  • Fuel Stabilizer: Add a high-quality stabilizer to your tank and run the engine for 10 minutes to ensure it reaches the injectors.
  • Battery Care: Disconnect the battery or place it on a trickle charger to maintain health.
  • Fogging the Cylinders: For long-term storage, fogging oil protects internal cylinder walls from rust.

Why Genuine Parts Matter

At Morisset Outboard Services, we advocate for the use of genuine filters, oils, and spark plugs. Aftermarket parts often lack the anti-corrosive properties required for marine environments. Using non-genuine parts can lead to catastrophic engine failure and may void your Terms and Conditions of sale.
